美国东部时间2001年9月11日早晨8:40，4架美国民航航班几乎被同时劫持，其中两架撞击位于纽约曼哈顿的世界贸易中心，纽约世界贸易中心的两幢110层摩天大楼在遭到攻击后相继倒塌，除此之外，世贸中心附近5幢建筑物也受震而坍塌损毁。一架飞机袭击了首都华盛顿美国国防部所在地五角大楼，导致五角大楼遭到局部破坏，部分结构坍塌。而第四架被劫持飞机在宾西法尼亚州坠毁，据事后调查失事前机上乘客试图从劫机者手中重夺飞机控制权。

在9.11事件中共有2996人罹难（不包括19名劫机者）：其中2974人被官方证实死亡，另外还有24人下落不明。罹难人员名单中包括：四架飞机上的全部乘客共246人，世贸中心2603人，五角大楼125人。共有411名救援人员在此事件中殉职。
